IUD

Details

The IUD, or intra uterine device, is a t-shaped piece of plastic that is inserted in the uterus to inhibit the way sperm can move and prevent them from fertilizing an egg. They offer between five and tens years of protection, depending on the type. They are reversible, meaning they can be removed at any time, allowing a women to get pregnant. There are two types: Mirena, which contains a hormone, levonorgestrel, which thickens the cervical mucus, and thins the uterine lining. ParaGard, contains copper which irritates the lining of the uterus and is toxic to sperm.
